Single Stage – Air Booster
A purified water bottling company needed continuous duty high-pressure oil free air to blow mold their PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles. A quick delivery was required on a duplex system, as the need for high pressure oil free air had been overlooked until the bottling machines were ready to be delivered.
With 135-psig clean plant air available, Hycomp recommended a duplex oil free BoostAirTM air booster package. The duplex system was approved, produced and shipped within the short six week time frame needed to start production. By compressing the existing plant air to 600 psig this Hycomp air booster met the customer’s requirements for their process.
Not only were energy costs reduced by using the existing plant air, but capital investment was lower because the customer was able to adapt to their existing compressor system. The customer is now able to provide their advertised water in its pristine natural state using the oil free high-pressure Hycomp air boosters.

Two Stage – Air Booster
On FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) vessels it is very important to safeguard the harvested petroleum against flashpoint/explosions. An international offshore drilling contractor needed a high pressure air supply for their nitrogen generation system, which is used in blanketing the petroleum – effectively protecting crew and cargo.
Safety and reliability is always paramount when handling flammable materials. Nitrogen membrane technology collects nitrogen from the local atmosphere. Pressurized air is fed through hollow fiber membranes to collect the nitrogen. The air flow must remain clean and oil free. Any contaminants would destroy the separator membrane.
Hycomp designed the AN68F-B201 oil free air booster to mate with the nitrogen generation system and supply both the pressure and flow required. The air booster is coated with a corrosive resistant offshore marine sealant to protect it from the open sea environment. Stainless steel piping and brass components are also utilized against the harsh conditions. This customer now has two of these air boosters on separate FPSO rigs in Norwegian waters and a nitrogen gas compressor on another rig in the Indian Ocean.
Three Stage – Air Booster
A municipal water district required a new water system using hydropneumatic tanks to buffer and absorb water hammer shocks. The tanks needed to be pressurized to 350 psig, and the compressors had to be oil-free and rated for continuous duty.
A Hycomp 3-stage oil-free air compressor was installed to meet this requirement. Because the unit was located in the mountains, a space heater was installed on the premium efficiency motor. Intercoolers included moisture separators that were also heat-taped. A crankcase heater was included on the compressor to overcome cold temperatures. A heavy-duty inlet filter with a rain hood was also included.
The city water has been protected due to the shock-absorbing capability of the hydropneumatic tanks, and the compressors meet the strict requirements for drinking water. Hycomp oil-free compressors are often used successfully in this type of application.

Monetary Risks of Oil-flooded Compression In Laser Cutting
A farming equipment manufacturer in South Dakota needed a nitrogen booster to aid in the cutting of stainless steel pieces.
This company originally had one of our oil-free products, but had since expanded and needed another compressor. To consolidate purchasing orders, they got a nitrogen generation system from a competitor that included an oil-flooded booster. Within the first two weeks, the buyer experienced difficulties related to cut quality. The products were coming out with severe oxidation, which resulted in products below their Quality Standards. These were ultimately scrapped due to cut quality and damage. In addition, their laser head had oil droplets on the glass and their filter housing was filled with oil. This caused the manufacturer to replace the laser head entirely. With their booster down so often, they also purchased roughly 12 tanks of liquid nitrogen, hired a different company to cut all 3/8” during this time, bought multiple new filters for the laser, and cleaned N2 lines. Before the cost of labor, this mistake totaled $62,398.
The farming equipment manufacturer ended up switching back to their Hycomp oil-free compressor. Unfortunately, due to residue downstream, the issue persisted. Our dependable product worked as intended, but after contamination from the oil-flooded compressor, there was nothing they could do to salvage the situation. The company has learned from their expensive error and contacted Hycomp immediately to invest in a new compressor. They want to work with oil-free products they are certain will not compromise their lasers or product standards.
